Sham 69 - The Original Line Up, XOYO, Birmingham - 4th June 2023
Sham 69 are one of the original British punks having first started by Jimmy Pursey in 1976. Being one of the most successful punk bands from that era, they have achieved five Top 20 singles and etched their name into rock and roll history. Their name comes from faded graffiti that had once said Walton and Hersham ’69, referencing the football team’s victory that year but had faded giving founding member Pursey the idea for the band’s moniker. The band emerged to prominence after the release of their first single I Don’t Wanna through Step Forward Records in 1977 - the golden year for punk. Sham 69 benefitted from the punk goldrush and soon signed to Polydor Records and released ever more success singles in succession starting with Borstal Breakout, Angels With Dirty Faces and their massive anthem If The Kids Are United. Their debut album entitled Tell Us The Truth was released in 1978 and featured a Live Side and Studio Side. Their second record; That’s Life, came out later the same year and was a double LP. That’s Life marked a hike in success for the band featuring the hit single Hurry up Harry. The following year saw the band release third album The Adventures Of The Hersham Boys which charted at #8 position. Get your Sham 69 tickets are available online through Gigantic.
